Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive social problem that not only undermines women’s physical and mental well-being but also significantly restricts their socioeconomic participation. In Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, the prevalence of GBV limits women’s ability to engage fully in economic and social activities by diminishing self-esteem, reducing access to educational and employment opportunities, and fostering social isolation (Akinola, 2023). This study examines the multifaceted impact of GBV on women’s economic empowerment and participation. It explores how violence creates barriers to workforce engagement, leadership roles, and community involvement, thereby hindering broader socioeconomic development (Olufemi, 2024). The research investigates systemic barriers and cultural norms that perpetuate GBV and restrict women’s opportunities, aiming to provide recommendations for fostering a more inclusive and equitable society (Onyema, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Alimosho, gender-based violence significantly impedes women’s socioeconomic participation, leading to disparities in employment, education, and leadership roles (Okafor, 2023). Despite initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s empowerment, GBV remains a persistent barrier to full economic and social inclusion. The lack of effective legal protection and support systems further exacerbates this issue. This study seeks to identify and analyze the ways in which GBV restricts women’s socioeconomic opportunities, providing a basis for targeted interventions to improve gender equality and promote women’s economic empowerment (Eze, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the prevalence of GBV in Alimosho.
To evaluate the impact of GBV on women's socioeconomic participation.
To recommend strategies for enhancing women's economic empowerment and social inclusion.
Research Questions:
How does GBV affect women's participation in socioeconomic activities in Alimosho?
What are the barriers to women's economic empowerment in the context of GBV?
What interventions can mitigate the impact of GBV on women's socioeconomic participation?
Research Hypotheses:
GBV negatively affects women’s socioeconomic participation.
Women who experience GBV have lower levels of economic empowerment.
Effective legal and social support systems will improve women’s socioeconomic outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical impact of GBV on women's socioeconomic participation. The findings will inform policymakers and stakeholders on how to enhance support systems and create an enabling environment for women's economic empowerment, fostering inclusive growth and development in Alimosho (Adesola, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Gender-based violence: Harmful acts directed at individuals based on their gender.
